Firefox Spyware Infects IE!
Well, not really, despite what some news site (and I use the term loosely) are reporting.
According to Mike:
If you were to believe several online news sites, there is an epidemic of spyware infecting Internet Explorer by way of Firefox. If you were also to believe that these accounts were written by competant journalists who have checked their facts, you would be wrong on both counts. [ source ]
And I’d be inclined to agree with him after reading the articles on both sites that he referenced (however the first was a little less misleading – but only slightly).
Both seem to gloss over the fact that this is a problem with clueless people with java installed and running who click “yes, please install some scary neverending pain in the ass crap on my computer because, even though a big fat warning just popped up telling me that someone somewhere wants to install some software from an untrusted source onto my computer and I have no idea what this software does or is, I’m curious and I don’t mind spending the next lifetime cleaning the sh*t off my computer after it gets boned” when their computer prompts them with a security alert.
Am I being too harsh, wouldn’t common sense dictate that if something pops up asking to install stuff from an unknown source onto your computer, you’d want to say “no” at least until you could figure out who and what is going to be installed?
Maybe I’m just moody or something…
