It’s official. Mild Insanity is now running the most recent version of WordPress.
This upgrade didn’t come entirely of my own volition; I used MI as a guinea pig (as I always do) in order to put together a video tutorial of the upgrade process. Although I’ve already done one, since 2.5 is a significant milestone, I figured it could use some sprucing up since the back end has changed.
A few things have changed since I wrote about the differences from 2.3 and it looks as though a couple of my suggestions were rolled into the final release, most notably, adding the permalink slug edit link under the title before the post actually gets published. And it even shows you how the slug will look, once published, based on your current permalink set up.
WordPress also tightened up the media uploader. In the bleeding edge alpha version I was going from, the media uploader only supported images, although a previous alpha version suggested that more formats, such as audio and video, would be supported. Looks like my suspicions were accurate.
It’s not entirely obvious what each little icon does, but hovering over a specific icon will give you a pop up screen with an explanation. However, because I’m nice like that, I’ve added numbers to the screen shot with an accompanying legend.
- Upload an image
- Upload video
- Upload audio
- Upload a file in general
And finally, if you’re looking for the timestamp button which used to be in the right hand column in 2.3 and at the very bottom of the page in the bleeding edge alpha, it’s been tucked back into the sidebar, but incognito.
Seasoned WordPress users may be surprised by the complete overhaul, but I’m sure they will get used to it in time. A lot of improvements have been made, though I still am a little disappointed in the posting screen. Actually, I’m mixed. The posting screen has been greatly improved from the previous design, but some elements still seem as though they’ve gone backwards.
(The amount of necessary scrolling has been reduced, however, a majority of the advanced options, to include custom field, have been shoved down at the bottom and they’re not even organizable.)
Since it’s incredibly late, it’s time for me to call it a night. Just wanted to get a little something up about the upgrade process and first observations. The video will probably be finished and uploaded to the OptiNiche blog some time tomorrow.
